April 26, 2010 Camping Water Heater

new at trailer camping. last year i used my 1992 dutchmen camper, i used the water reserve tank cuz there was no water hook-up. this year i have a site with water. last year everything worked fine. this year when i closed the bye pass and opened the water lines to the water heater i get no water coming out of the kitchen sink, the bath still works. i tried twice, each time when i drained the hot water tank and put the valves in winterize position i would have water at the kitchen. as soon as i set the valves to fill hot water tank no kitchen, hot or cold. i didn’t bother firing up the heater cuz not sure if coils had water. sorry this is kind of wordy but haven’t found an help yet

That is really bizarre. When you have the water pump switched on, do you have any leakage of water from under your trailer/camper or in it? Does the pump sound "funny"? There is so many possible issues here it is not even funny. I am not laughing at you, most definitely with you because I have dealt with similar issues. It’s a pain to sort this stuff out. Quite often the lines or joints will fail in trailers/campers, despite the best of maintenance. Do you have an in-line water filter for your trailer. It could be dirty and obstructing the water flow, like to your kitchen sink. This would be my first guess, an obstructed filter….You don’t need filtered water to bathe, but to drink, is there one incorporated into your kitchen sink or water heater. These are just general ideas to check.

For troubleshooting, I would start by filling your freshwater tank with water. Turn on the pump and hot water heater. Listen for strange sounds, check for leaks. Check the function of every water using device in your trailer/camper. Whatever problems you find, keep them in mind. Next, with the pressure regulator attached to your trailer/camper, hook it up to your garden hose (city water) and do the same check. What works and what doesn’t? Compare the two, it should help you narrow down the possibilities. Can you get hot and cold water, where are you not?

My guess, a dirty/clogged filter(s), a broken water line, a water pump that needs replacing, corrosion or mineralization inside the water heater obstructing water flow.

Sorry, I was even more wordy, if you can narrow down some specifics I will keep an eye on your post and try to help. Good luck, don’t bang you head on anything, I have done this enough for both of us!
